How Jesus Helps You Manage Your Money

Money—it’s a topic that makes many people uncomfortable in church, but it’s one Jesus didn’t shy away from. In Matthew 6:19–24, during His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus offers timeless wisdom on managing money, revealing how our finances impact more than our wallets—they shape our hearts and spiritual focus. Let’s explore three powerful ways Jesus teaches us how to manage our money.

Money Reveals Your Heart

Jesus states, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21). How we spend our money reflects our true priorities. Are we focused on accumulating material possessions that decay, rust, or can be stolen? Or are we investing in eternal treasures—supporting God’s work, helping others, and building spiritual wealth?

When our resources are directed toward things of eternal value, our hearts follow. This isn’t about ‘buying’ God’s favor; it’s about letting our investments shape what we love.

Clarity Leads to Wise Spending

Jesus uses the metaphor of the eye as the light of the body: “If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light” (Matthew 6:22). A clear, undivided focus on God’s kingdom gives us spiritual clarity and helps us avoid frivolous or impulsive spending.

Practical steps like prayerful budgeting, seeking accountability, and resisting material temptations can align our finances with God’s purposes and bring peace to our financial decisions.

You Can’t Serve Two Masters

“No man can serve two masters… Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24). Jesus calls us to choose: Will we serve God or the pursuit of wealth? Chasing material gain often leads to stress, misplaced priorities, and spiritual emptiness. On the other hand, trusting God and stewarding our resources for His kingdom frees us from the bondage of money and cultivates a deeper relationship with Him.

The Bottom Line

Jesus doesn’t call us to abandon money but to use it wisely and with an eternal perspective. He reminds us that money is a tool—not a master. By refocusing our priorities on spiritual investments, we not only manage our money better but also experience peace, purpose, and a deeper connection with God.
