Who we are
Portland Gospel Church exists to see people believe, live, and share the gospel of Jesus Christ.
We are a church built upon the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, to declare the good news of Jesus Christ whereby all can be saved and reconciled to God.
It is our unique privilege in history to know God in an intimate and personal way through the new birth, the indwelling of God’s Spirit, and a position in Jesus Christ.
Believe the Gospel.
Start here! We use these introductory steps to help believers and unbelievers find faith in Christ.
-
Before a Christian can do anything else they have to start here! Whether you are new to the faith or returning to find it again, this is the beginning of everything we do. We invite all people to attend, learn, and grow so that they can believe the gospel for themselves.
John 3:3
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.Romans 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. -
Upon accepting Christ, the very first steps for a believer to take is water baptism. It does NOT save, but identifies us with Jesus Christ and humbles the heart in obedience to Him.
Matthew 28:19–20
[19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
[20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.Acts 8:12
But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.Acts 18:8
And Crispus, the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house; and many of the Corinthians hearing believed, and were baptized. -
Believers are called to live and serve together in a church. This may be new to people or perhaps they have been 'church hurt'. We invite you to join us for church activities and continue to learn more about what it means to believe the gospel and live for the Lord.
Acts 2:44–47
[44] And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
[45] And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
[46] And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
[47] Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.Hebrews 10:25
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. -
We live at such a wonderful time in history to have a completed and preserved bible in the English language. We don't have to wonder what God thinks or who He is! We simply need to read and allow Him to reveal Himself to us through His word. We invite you to follow along on our church wide reading plan to learn more.
1 Timothy 4:13
Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.Luke 4:4
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
Live the Gospel.
Want more? We have next steps to help believers grow to become a faithful disciple.
-
The very first step in learning how to live our the Christian life is to follow someone else. In Christianity we call this discipleship. Through an intentional mentorship, disciples will grow through the doctrines of God's word and the accountability to live them out.
Ephesians 4:14
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;2 Timothy 2:2
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.1 Corinthians 4:15
For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.Philippians 4:9
Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you. -
God has given every believer specific things to steward. Disciples have those things surrendered to Him. As we grow deeper with the Lord, we learn to surrender our gift, resources, and identities to Him so that He can use them to forward His mission in reaching the world.
Matthew 6:21
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.1 Corinthians 16:2
Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.2 Corinthians 9:6–8
[6] But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully.
[7] Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.[8] And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:
1 Corinthians 12:7
But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. -
Every believer is designed to live in community together with other Christians. The church is not just a social club or a Sunday experience, it is a body, a living entity where we are "members one of another". We need each other in fellowship, gifting in the Spirit, counsel and encouragement. Every member has a role to play as we work together to reach the world with the gospel.
Romans 12:5
So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.Acts 2:42–46
[42] And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
[43] And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
[44] And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
[45] And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
[46] And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,Ephesians 4:15–16
[15] But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
[16] From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. -
We CANOT grow without God's word. Only God's word provides enriching nourishment to live the out the gospel and the Christian life. This is a shift from devotions and favorite verses to rightly dividing and learning doctrine.
John 8:31
Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;2 Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.Hebrews 5:13–14
[13] For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.
[14] But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
Share the Gospel.
-
Just like in parenting, this is not something an immature believer can handle. We must grow to walk with the Lord and be equipped with the gospel to reproduce sons and daughters of God.
Proverbs 11:30
The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. -
Everyone that has been discipled has an investment to make in another person. A combination of what the Lord has taught you as you've walked with Him, and the things others have invested into you needs to be deposited into other souls.
2 Timothy 2:2
And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.2 Timothy 1:13
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.2 Timothy 3:14
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; -
At some point, all believers are responsible for teaching God's word and investing in other people. The church needs a plethora of instructors and teachers, whether it be to children, young people, parents or adults. God's word is applicable to all stages.
Acts 13:1
Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
Romans 12:7
Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;Titus 2:1–6
[1] But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
[2] That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
[3] The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
[4] That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
[5] To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
[6] Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. -
Not every Christian should be a pastor or missionary, but all should struggle with the possibility of it. It is the church's job to train, equip, and send believers on mission into the harvest, but we can only send the prepared and the called.
Matthew 28:18–20
[18] And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
[19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
[20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.Acts 13:2–3
[2] As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
[3] And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.1 Timothy 5:22
Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s sins: keep thyself pure.
Not done yet! Mature believers need to steward their growth to perform the work of the ministry in their own lives, families, and even the world.
